Orthodontic emergencies are extremely rare, but accidents do happen. We want you to feel prepared if they do. Here are our tips for smoothly navigating orthodontic emergencies before you can get in to see us.
If one of your brackets has broken or come away from your tooth, use some orthodontic wax to try and hold it in place and give us a ring to book an emergency appointment.
If part of your archwire has broken, first try placing some orthodontic wax over the end of the archwire. If that doesn’t work, gently trim the archwire with a sterilised pair of nail scissors and ring us to make an emergency appointment.
When you start Invisalign® treatment, you will be issued a couple of spare sets of aligners. If you lose an aligner please let us know as soon as possible so we can order you new ones at a cost. This could delay your treatment and affect your results, so it’s important to look after your aligners carefully.
If your appliances are rubbing on the inside of your cheeks and causing mouth ulcers, start by placing pieces of orthodontic wax over the part of your appliance that is causing irritation. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, let us know and ask your pharmacist for some medication.
If you don’t keep your teeth clean with regular brushing and flossing, food can get caught between your teeth. During treatment it’s extremely important to keep your teeth clean as plaque can build up around your appliance and cause tooth decay.
