If straightening your teeth has been on your to-do list for a while, autumn is a good time to tick it off. Many mild to moderate Invisalign cases are completed in around six to twelve months. Start in October or November and you could have a straighter smile by next summer.
Invisalign is just as effective whatever the month. But starting in autumn gives you a calmer stretch to get comfortable with your aligners, and a finish date that falls right when you’ll want to show off your smile.
Why is autumn a smart time to begin Invisalign treatment?
Finish your treatment in time for summer
Lots of people come to us with a big date in mind. It might be a wedding, a summer holiday or graduation day at Dundee or Abertay. Count back six to twelve months from next summer and you’ll find the ideal start date is right about now. Leave it until spring and that summer deadline becomes much harder to hit.
Settle in while things are quiet
Your first week or two in aligners can feel a bit unusual. Your teeth might feel tender when you move to a new set, and some people notice a slight lisp for a few days. It doesn’t last, but it’s far easier to get through during a quiet autumn than in the middle of summer holidays, weddings and evenings out.
Autumn routines help you build good habits
For the best results, Invisalign aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. Once the school term is underway and work has settled after the summer, it’s much easier to make that part of your routine. Build the habit now and it will carry you through the rest of your treatment.
Your aligners won’t get in the way at Christmas
If you start in October or November, wearing your aligners will feel like second nature by December. Simply take them out for Christmas dinner and enjoy everything on the table. Just give your teeth a brush before you pop them back in.
Stay discreet through party season
Invisalign aligners are clear, so most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them. Enjoy the work Christmas night out, catch-ups with friends and family photos without a metal brace in sight.
Get ahead of the New Year rush
Hogmanay is when many people decide this will finally be the year they sort out their smile. Start in autumn and you’ll already be a few months in, with real progress to show for it.
What to expect when you start Invisalign treatment at Beam Orthodontics
Your journey begins with a free consultation at our Dundee practice. We’ll check your teeth and gums, talk through what you’d like to change about your smile and give you an honest answer on whether Invisalign is right for you. If it is, we’ll take a 3D digital scan so you can see a preview of how your teeth are planned to move.
Once your aligners are ready, we’ll fit your first set and show you how to care for them. You’ll change to a new set every week or two, and we’ll monitor your progress with regular check-ups and dental monitoring. When your treatment is complete, retainers will keep your new smile in place.

Common questions about starting Invisalign in Autumn
Is autumn a good time to start Invisalign?
For many people, yes. Invisalign works the same in any season, but starting in autumn fits neatly around the festive period and gives you a good chance of finishing before summer.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
That depends on how far your teeth need to move. Many mild to moderate cases take six to twelve months, and we’ll give you a personal estimate at your consultation.
Can you start Invisalign before Christmas?
Absolutely. Start in October or November and you’ll be well used to your aligners by December. Take them out for festive meals and put them back in afterwards.
Does Invisalign hurt?
You may feel some pressure for a day or two each time you switch to a new set of aligners. Most patients describe it as a feeling of tightness rather than pain, and it soon eases.
Can you eat normally with Invisalign?
Yes. You remove your aligners to eat, so there are no foods you need to avoid. Just brush your teeth before putting them back in.
How many hours a day should you wear your aligners?
Aim for 20 to 22 hours a day. Only take them out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush your teeth.
