Ensuring your new smile lasts

Orthodontic treatment consists of three key stages. First there's the consultation, then it's the fitting and wearing of your appliance to straighten your teeth. The final stage, which is perhaps the most important of them all, is the retention stage when the focus is on keeping your newly straightened teeth in position.

Our specialist orthodontists ensure your teeth remain where they should by fitting you with a removable or fixed retainer. These appliances allow the tissues and bone around your teeth to reorganise and become more stable, minimising any relapse.

Everyone needs retainers to keep their fabulous new smile looking its best.

Types of retainers

  • Removable retainers are made of clear, thin thermosetting plastic and are virtually invisible and very comfortable to wear. They look like thin sports mouthguards and slot over your top and bottom teeth. It is recommended you wear these full-time for the first week, then go to 12 hours a day (eg. evenings and at night). We review you every three months for the first year and gradually reduce the wear to alternate nights for the long term.
  • Fixed retainers are attached behind the teeth to ensure long-term 24/7 stability. These are particularly useful to maintain alignment of the lower teeth or where teeth were very rotated and crowded to start with. They may be left in situ for a long time and will be monitored initially by our orthodontists and eventually by your own dentist.

Retainers are not indestructible so will need to be repaired or replaced over time. We never advise our patients to stop wearing retainers as that almost ALWAYS results in your teeth moving and relapsing to some degree.

Each person’s requirement will be different, depending upon how far teeth have been moved during the active phase. That is why we will provide you with individual instructions and post-treatment care.

Benefits of retainers

After all the work it has taken to get your teeth into a beautifully straight position, you want to do all you can to keep them there. Here are five benefits of post-treatment care:

  • Retainers will ensure your smile stays perfect
  • They are comfortable and easy to maintain
  • Removable retainers are virtually invisible
  • Fixed retainers are on the backs of the teeth so completely invisible
  • Retainers prevent your teeth from relapsing

Remember, the retention phase is as important as the moving teeth phase! You have made a considerable investment in your smile, so it is essential that you have a lifetime commitment to keeping your teeth looking great.
