Retainers

After your orthodontic appliance comes off, we want you to enjoy your newly straightened smile for years to come. That’s why retention is the most important stage of treatment. A retainer will ensure your teeth don’t slip back out of alignment.

Our orthodontists will make sure your teeth retain their proper alignment by fitting you with a custom removable or fixed retainer. These appliances allow the tissues and bone around your teeth to reorganise and become more stable, minimising any relapse.

Types of retainers

At Beam Orthodontics, we offer two types of retainers - fixed and removable.

Removable retainers: Removable retainers are made of clear, thermosetting plastic and look a bit like Invisalign® clear aligners. They are virtually invisible and very comfortable to wear.

We recommend you wear your removable retainers full-time for the first week, and 12 hours a day after that. We’ll check in every three months for the first year, and gradually reduce the wear to alternate nights for the long term.

Fixed retainers: Fixed retainers are attached behind your teeth to ensure long-term 24/7 stability. These are particularly useful if teeth were very crooked and crowded to start with. We will monitor your progress post-treatment to ensure your retainer is working as planned.

Benefits of retainers

After all the work to get your teeth into that beautifully straight position, you want to do all you can to keep them there. Here are five benefits of post-treatment care with retainers:

  • Retainers will ensure your smile stays as beautiful as the day we removed your braces
  • Retainers are comfortable and very easy to maintain
  • Fixed retainers are completely hidden from view
  • Removable retainers are clear and virtually invisible
