At Beam Orthodontics, we take a different approach to orthodontics. We will look at your smile and talk you through the treatment options we would recommend. Sometimes the best option might not be braces and we will explain why.
Our specialist orthodontists have spent three years full-time completing their postgraduate qualification in orthodontics, in addition to their undergraduate degree in dentistry. This means they are highly experienced in diagnosing orthodontic treatment problems and recommending the very best orthodontic treatment for you. In some instances, this treatment may be in the form of fixed metal braces.
What are fixed metal braces?
Fixed metal braces are the traditional orthodontic appliance. They are the ones that look like train tracks on your teeth. But before you say, "I’m not wearing them!” read on. Orthodontics has evolved rapidly over the past few decades and that includes the size, design, look and feel of fixed metal braces.
Today, these braces are much smaller, more discreet and more comfortable to wear. And all of these benefits haven’t taken away their effectiveness. They are still one of the best orthodontic appliances for straightening teeth.

How do metal braces work?
Fixed metal braces are made up of three parts: brackets, archwires and elastic bands (ligatures). The small metal brackets are fitted to the front surface of each tooth with an orthodontic adhesive. The thin metal archwires then connect these brackets and the small elastic bands are fitted around the brackets. Combined, these three components apply gentle force to your teeth, encouraging them to move slowly but surely into a straighter position.
