When should I bring my child for their first orthodontic consultation?

The British Orthodontics Society (BOS) recommends all children have an early consultation with an orthodontist between the ages of 7 and 11. This is a time when their jaws are still malleable, making it easier to assess potential issues and guide their teeth into position if need be.

We won’t necessarily recommend treatment start straight away but it does give us a chance to identify orthodontic issues and plan for them, thus saving you – and your child – time, money and potentially invasive orthodontic treatment in the long term.

Braces on the NHS

Children under the age of 18 could be eligible for orthodontic treatment on the NHS. The NHS guidelines specify that braces can only be fitted for dental health needs, not simply cosmetic reasons. Young people with severe crowding, protruding or buried teeth may be eligible.

The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is used to establish the cases severe enough for NHS funding. There may also be a long waiting list for NHS treatment.

If your child is not eligible for braces on the NHS, or you don’t feel they should wait for treatment, don’t despair. Our Essentials Range offers an affordable way of contributing to your child’s future success.
