Removable braces

These are often used for younger patients prior to having fixed braces fitted, and are usually only worn on the upper teeth. They can easily be removed for cleaning and contact sports.

Removable braces are often prescribed for our younger patients in the first stage of treatment prior to fixed appliances being fitted, and are usually only worn on the upper teeth.

As the name suggests, these braces are not fixed to the teeth and can be removed for cleaning, brushing your teeth and contact sports, although only for very short periods as they should be worn as much as possible to ensure progress and the best results.

Removable braces are often used as part of a course of treatment at Beam Orthodontic Practice and usually have delicate wires and springs attached, which move the teeth using gentle pressure.

Ideally the appliance should be removed after eating and cleaned with a toothbrush and rinsed under cold running water. The removable brace should also be taken out before cleaning your teeth. Some patients choose to remove their brace for contact sports and playing wind instruments.

Can I eat normally?

Invisalign offers the best of both worlds in terms of results and usability. The aligners are easily removable and should be taken out for eating. It is best to clean your teeth before placing the aligners straight back in.

What about tooth brushing?

It is important you brush thoroughly at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. You can remove
your aligners to clean your teeth, and gently brush them but DO NOT RINSE THEM IN HOT WATER. Cold or luke warm water is fine but hot water will melt and deform the aligners.

How often can I remove my brace?

We understand that because your brace is removable, it is tempting to take it out but this should be avoided. To achieve the desired result with Invisalign you should wear your aligners 22 hours a day. That means only taking them out to eat and drink or to clean your teeth.

How long will treatment take?

Treatment with a removable brace at Beam Specialist Orthodontic Practice usually takes 6—24 months but will vary with each individual case. Most Invisalign treatment we do are less than 12 months.

How often will I need an appointment?

The Beam team will invite you back for regular appointments for your aligners to be checked and to issue you with the next set of aligners in the sequence. Adjustments are usually made every 6 weeks.

Do I still need to see my regular dentist?

Yes. It is very important that you continue your regular examinations with your usual dentist during your orthodontic treatment at Beam Dundee, so that your teeth can be thoroughly examined to ensure they remain healthy and strong.

What if I play contact sports?

You should wear a gum shield instead of your aligners when you play contact sports.
