Reliable orthodontic solutions from Beam in Dundee
Often referred to as ‘train tracks’, fixed metal braces are a reliable, affordable way to straighten your teeth. Coloured elastic bands are a popular addition, especially for teenagers looking to brighten up their braces.
The brackets are fixed to the front of the teeth for the duration of your treatment and our therapists and specialist orthodontists will adjust the wires every few months to ensure the teeth are moving smoothly into the correct position. Treatment usually takes between 12 and 24 months depending on the complexity of the case.
Fixed appliances are attached with adhesive and fitting the braces is totally painless. We place brackets on the front teeth from to give a small accurate ‘handle’on each tooth.

Looking after your fixed brace
Special care is necessary with a fixed appliance to ensure success and you do have to slightly adapt your eating technique. We advise our patients not to eat any sticky sweets, toffee or chewing gum, or bite into anything hard such as crusty rolls, peanuts and muesli bars.
How long will treatment take?
Treatment usually takes 12-24 months but will vary according to how severe the case is. Repeated breakages of your fixed brace will add to the overall treatment time –please call us as soon as you can if your break your brace, don’t wait until your next appointment.
Will I need to wear anything in addition to the fixed brace?
It may be necessary at some stage during the treatment, to wear elastics. Elastics are worn inside the mouth all the time, including mealtimes and provide the force to straighten the teeth.
Will I need to wear another brace once my treatment has finished?
Once the active phase of your treatment has been finished, it will be necessary to wear a retaining brace. Normally these are removable and worn at nights but in some cases we use fixed wire retainers on the backs of the anterior teeth.
